Although
this building dates to 1886 it was the second such house built for the Admiralty.
The first which was sited nearb
y
was erected in 1765. This was the residence of the Naval Commander in Chief
of Queenstown. The house commanded a watchful eye on the harbour and could
signal by way of flags to naval ships anchored there. Following Independence
in 1922 the House was set alight by Republican Forces. It was later purchased
by the Catholic church who refurbished it and set it up as a Noviciate for
the Sisters of Mercy. In 1993 the house was bought by the Benedictine Sisters
who operate today as a contemplative monastery.
