St.
Colman's Cathedral, overlooking Cobh, enshrines within its walls the traditions
off thirteen centuries of the Diocese of Cloyne. Built in the form of a Latin
Cross, its exterior is of Dalkey Granite with dressings of Mallow Limestone.
The Cathedral is named after St. Colman (522-604) w
ho
is patron of the Diocese of Cloyne. His feast day is on November 24th. The
style of architecture is French Gothic and the architects were Pugin, Ashlin
and Coleman. (Pugin the younger). It took 47 years to build (1868 to 1916).
The total cost was £ 235,000. £ 90,000 of this was raised by the people of
Cobh, the remainder came from the Diocese and very substantial amounts were
raised in America and Australia. The spire was completed in 1915 and the famous
carillon and the clock were installed in 1916. The carillon - the largest
in Ireland - originally consisted of 42 bells but 5 more were added in 1958.
Today it has 49 bells, the heaviest weighing 3.6 tonnes.
