These
steps were used by church goers who made their way to the first Methodist
church built in 1810 which was located on the terraces above, hence the name
"Preaching House Steps". The Quay which can be seen from the opposite side
of the street was formerly known as Inmans Quay. This later became Baths Quay
which refers to Public Bathing Baths that were built in 1878. In later years
these baths were used as an emigrant "cleansing
station"
for intending emigrants to America. During the first World War an American
Naval Men's Club was erected on this quay for the recreation and leisure of
US service personnel stationed at Aghada across the Harbour. The solitary
red brick chimney is now all that remains of the baths.
