Currently
housing the sirius Arts Centre, the Cobh and Harbour Chamber of Commerce and
Cobh's Tourist Information Office, the Old Yacht Club was built in 1854. It
was the headquarters of the Royal Cork Yacht Club from that date until 1965.
The forerunner of the RCYC was the Water Club which was established in 1720
making it the oldest yacht club in the world. The RCYC is still operating
to this day across the harbour in Crosshaven. The Schooner "America" after
which the Americas Cup is named sailed in this harbour for a number of years.
The name Sirius derives from the first steamer to cross the Atlantic. It left
from Passage West which is a short distance upriver from Cobh and arrived
to great acclaim in New York on 22nd April 1838.
